Sted: FAFO

Researchers: Hanne Kavli and Marjan Nadim

Duration: 2007-2009
Funded by the Ministry of Children and Equality.

The study aims to map family practices and perceptions of gender equality among Pakistani, Vietnamese, Iranian and Iraqi immigrants, descendants of Pakistani immigrants and ethnic Norwegians. The study will draw both on register data from Statistics Norway, a survey with 1800 respondents including register data and finally, focus groups. We will start by describing the main types of family practices in different groups, but also to emphasize the in-group variations. We will then move on to describe variations in attitudes towards marriage, family size, divorce, gender roles, care for elderly parents and the care and upbringing of children. Finally, we will discuss how perceptions and practices develop over time and how masculinity is perceived, construed and practiced among immigrants in the context of the Norwegian society.
